Baker Institute for Animal Health
Support a world leader in veterinary medical research
For nearly 60 years, the Baker Institute for Animal Health, an academic unit of the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been a world leader in top-quality veterinary medicine research that has led to practical advances in animal health. The institute is dedicated solely to veterinary research of the highest caliber and scientific merit; even so, every faculty and staff member is motivated by concern for the animals and human beings whom the research is intended to benefit.
Current research initiatives include human and companion animal cancer, infectious diseases and immunology, genetics and reproduction, wildlife conservation, and canine hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.
Many thousands of pet owners, breeders, and veterinarians share our sense of mission; their financial support has endowed the institute with a measure of permanence that public grant funding can never provide. Major investments have been made in the institute’s research facilities, including a new laboratory wing and the Thaw Lecture Theater. But far more important are the faculty, staff, and students working in those structures, and the ideas that germinate within the laboratory walls. The product of the institute’s work is the practical application of scientific investigation in the form of vaccines, genetic tests, and reproductive studies to benefit animal populations.
The institute's future plans include recruiting outstanding faculty, maintaining educational programs that train and attract future leaders, acquiring equipment necessary to compete in today’s rapidly evolving scientific fields, and renovating building facilities that reflect the ingenious work being conducted.
