Annual gifts in support of Athletics and Physical Education power a winning tradition. They are essential to advancing all of Cornell’s Big Red intercollegiate teams and the games and competitions that bring together enthusiastic Cornell fans. Annual giving is the backbone of student innovation within the college, supporting a wide array of undergraduate projects and research, from designing and launching satellites to exploring ultrasound waves that affect living organisms. Undergraduates in chemical and biomolecular engineering are fabricating and testing microcatheters for delivering drugs to the brain. Students are working with Professor Hod Lipson in mechanical and aerospace engineering to design and construct self-reconfiguring, modular robots that can adapt to new tasks and environments, as well as self-repair and even self-replicate. These hands-on experiences encourage students to expand their learning beyond the classroom. The newly renovated Experiential Learning Lab locates teams in a central facility, offers a space for sharing resources and knowledge, and emphasizes interdisciplinary teamwork to accomplish a common goal. Unrestricted giving provides the college with the flexibility to fund these unique aspects of undergraduate life and learning.

The breadth of Cornell’s contributions to society is truly astounding. Every day, world-class faculty, exceptional students, and distinguished alumni around the globe are advancing our world in the areas of research, the humanities, and the arts. However, state and endowment funding covers only part of what the university needs each year to continue offering the outstanding programs, student aid, and faculty development that are Cornell’s hallmarks. The gap between a dean’s or director’s budget line and the college’s actual need—that margin of excellence—is covered each year by Annual Fund gifts. Annual Fund resources may bring a noted speaker to the classroom, purchase library books, upgrade equipment, or provide a stipend for a postdoctoral student. They may also provide start-up funds for new endowed professorships, funds for financial aid, or seed money for new initiatives.

Giving to the Annual Fund expands the museum's ability to serve Cornell and the community as a dynamic forum for ideas, art, and people. Annual funds have allowed some 6,000 schoolchildren to visit the museum to learn about art objects and their makers. They have helped art history majors curate an annual show, and the Museum Club to host jazz nights and blues nights for the campus community. Since Annual Fund giving accounts for about 10 percent of the museum’s yearly budget, giving to the fund helps keep the museum's doors open without charging admission and provides resources for day-to-day operations, including salaries, programs, and publications. Increased support will give the museum the leverage it needs to produce more scholarly catalogs, host more concerts, and address more topics with greater depth.
