Flow cytometry is a method for quantitating parameters of cells primarily by optical means. While a flow cytometer evaluates one cell at a time, thousands of cells can be processed within seconds; furthermore, the flow cytometer is used to phenotype cells, which helps scientists better understand the pathogenesis of a disease. This powerful technique allows our scientists to analyze whole populations to subsets to individual cells.

Science and technology have advanced, and Institute scientists are now capable of asking much more refined questions relevant to biomedical research. For example, by using the flow cytometer, Institute scientists have learned that, in hepatitis, cells that injure the liver are actually activated in the intestinal tract, which demonstrates a close, but not fully understood, relationship between the gut and liver. To answer questions similar to this and to remain competitive as a research institute, the Institute needs to upgrade its flow cytometric capabilities. The current instrument serves most laboratories and is the most highly used large piece of equipment at the Institute. An investment in an upgraded flow cytometer represents a leap forward in the Institute’s capabilities and will allow many of the scientists to extend their current research programs.
