Helen Newman Hall
For health, wellness and recreation
Built in 1963 and designed to accommodate women's athletics, Helen Newman Hall cannot keep pace with the explosive demand among students--both male and female--on North Campus for recreational and workout spaces. An overcrowded fitness room and waits well over 30 minutes for court time and swimming lanes reflect the high numbers of Cornellians who rely on the hall’s facilities. The renewal of Helen Newman Hall will add:
- a two-court gymnasium
- a new lap pool
- a multi-activity court
- a new lobby and game area
- an up-to-speed fitness center
The plan also includes reconfiguring locker space, creating a new façade, and providing suitable workspace for an expanded staff in Recreational Services. The three-story building overlooking Beebe Lake on Cornell's North Residential Campus was made possible by a gift from Floyd R. Newman ’12, a former member of the Board of Trustees, in honor of his wife, Helen.
Helen Newman Hall is now the home of the Department of Recreational Services, which directs the Cornell fitness centers, the faculty/staff wellness program, intramural sports, the bowling center, and open recreation.
